Overview
This Mixed Moss Blend is collected from a couple of our thriving tanks, consisting primarily of Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) with the occasional inclusion of Subwassertang, Fissidens Moss, or Cameroon Moss. The moss is kept in an active shrimp tank, providing a rich and healthy environment for aquatic life.
Key Mosses in the Mix:
Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri):
A fast-growing, hardy moss with a loose, feathery structure.
Bright green, adaptable to various conditions, and easy to maintain.
Subwassertang (Lomariopsis lineata):
A delicate, translucent green moss-like plant with a rounded, overlapping structure.
Often mistaken for moss, it adds softness and texture.
Fissidens Moss (Fissidens fontanus):
A slow-growing moss with a fine, feather-like appearance.
Creates a structured and elegant look.
Cameroon Moss (Taxiphyllum sp. Cameroon):
A denser, bushier moss with compact growth, adding volume and richness.
Aquarium Uses:
Aquascaping: Ideal for attaching to driftwood, rocks, or creating moss carpets.
Shelter: Provides hiding spots and grazing surfaces for shrimp, fry, and small fish.
Biofilm: Promotes the growth of biofilm, a natural food source for shrimp and some fish.
Care Requirements:
Light: Low to medium lighting is sufficient for Java Moss and Subwassertang; Fissidens and Cameroon Moss may thrive better with moderate lighting.
CO₂: Not mandatory but can enhance growth, especially for Fissidens and Cameroon Moss.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 20°C–28°C (68°F–82°F).
pH: 6.0–7.5.
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.
Propagation:
Method: Propagates through division. Break off pieces and reattach to new surfaces using thread, glue, or mesh.
Growth: Spreads naturally over time, attaching to surfaces like wood, rocks, or the substrate.
Maintenance Tips:
Trimming: Regularly trim to maintain shape and prevent overgrowth.
Debris Removal: Clean gently to avoid debris and algae buildup.
Water Flow: Provide moderate water flow to keep the moss clean and healthy.
Compatibility:
Safe for all freshwater species, including shrimp, snails, and small fish.
Excellent for shrimp tanks, as the mix promotes biofilm growth and provides a natural grazing area.
This Mixed Moss Blend offers an exciting combination of textures and colors, making it an excellent choice for dynamic aquascapes. Whether you’re aiming for a jungle-like setup or a minimalist scape with focal points, this mix adapts beautifully to various styles while providing functional benefits for your tank’s ecosystem.
Cape Town, it's not goodbye — just see you later. Pretoria, get ready.
CT, thank you for 4 incredible years of shrimp keeping with us. Pretoria, we're bringing the fire — hope you're ready to step up your game!
To our Cape Town crew: we're not leaving you high and dry. For the first 6 months post-move, we'll run a special shipping arrangement to keep the best shrimp landing on your doorstep at a reduced courier rate!
Heads up on timing: relocating an entire breeding room of shrimp is no small feat. All orders will be paused from 23 August while we relocate and rebuild. Dry goods (food, minerals, botanicals) should be back online sooner. Shrimp will take longer — new tanks need to fully cycle before they're safe to stock, so we're targeting early October, but livestock depends on the tanks being ready, not just the calendar.
We'll keep you posted as the new setup comes together. Thanks for growing with us.
Who knows what other plans there are behind the scenes for ShrimpNation the next year. 👀
